I. Course Code: LITT 1

II. Course Title: Philippine Literature

III. Course Description: Survey of the Philippine Literature from its beginning to the present to the present, with emphasis on the different types of genres as exemplified by selected literary texts from various regions of the Philippines written at different periods in Philippine literary history.
IV. Pre-requisite: None

V. Credit: 3 units

VI. Course Objectives: At the end of the course, with 70% proficiency, students are expected to:

  1. Define literature and its genres;
  2. Explain the importance of studying Philippine literature;
  3. Differentiate the classifications of literature and each genres;
  4. Identify historical issues that give rise to the expression of the Philippine experience and sensibilities in the native and non-native language;
  5. Describe common and different values, ideals and insight often expressed in the literature of different historical periods;
  6. Relate the values from the stories, dramas, poems, essay and novels in the present situation;
  7. Interpret aesthetic values and important insights concerning human nature and human experience; and
  8. Demonstrate analytical, critical thinking and writing skills through substantial reading.

Quizzes                            10%

Presentation/Written Report      30%

Participation                      10%

TOTAL: 100%

Grading System      : Absolute Grading System

Passing Grade:        : 70%

Semestral Grade     : Average between Midterm Grade and Final Grade  = (MG + FG)/ 2

 

XIII. Course Policies:

  1. Students must observe the policies of the University, especially the student code of conduct, as stated in the student handbook.
  2. Students must meet deadlines in presentation and submission of homeworks and projects.
